What is Dual Enrollment (formerly Advanced Education)?
Interested in taking college classes while in high school? Dual Enrollment provides high school students with educational enrichment opportunities at the community college level. Current high school students interested in taking classes at one of the Los Rios Community Colleges (SCC, CRC ARC, or FLC) can enroll in college courses each semester (summer, fall and spring).
What is the eligibility criteria?
- The student has started the 9th grade or will be at least 14 years old by the first day of instruction.
- The course the student wants to take is not available at their high school (dual-enrollment classes do not count toward high school graduation requirements).
- The student is prepared for advanced study as recommended by their counselor.
- The student has parental consent to be admitted and enrolled at the college.
What are the benefits of taking Advanced Education courses?
- Cost-effective way to earn college units (free tuition, minus the cost of books and any fees).
- Motivation to stick with it and pursue a college degree or certificate. "Dual-enrollment students are more likely to attend and graduate from college" - Savingforcollege.com
- Introduction to and preparation for college life.
- Opportunity to explore interests, careers, and majors.
- Understanding the benefits of a college education.
Things to consider:
- Dual enrollment courses are taught to the rigor of a college course. Students use college textbooks and syllabi. Assignments are graded using college rubrics and standards.
- The grades earned in college courses will be reflected on your permanent college transcript.
- Do you understand the college's academic calendar and how to drop classes without notation or with a "W" if you are not earning the grade you desire?
- Do you have enough time to dedicate to college courses outside of your regular high school day?
- When a high school student enrolls in a college course, privacy rights under FERPA (Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act) related to the class transfer from parent to student.
