FAQ's
What is a Work Permit?
A Work Permit grants students permission to work while attending school. It is a document that contains the span of hours and work place restrictions that are unique to working minors. Work Permits are issued with the understanding that school is a minor's first and primary responsibility. Having a Work Permit is a privilege that can be revoked at any time if it is determined by the school that a student is failing to progress towards graduation due to poor academic performance or excessive absenteeism.
Do I Need A Work Permit Before I Get A Job?
No, students don’t need a Work Permit until they are hired somewhere or about to be hired. A Work Permit is a contract between the student, parent, and the specific place of employment. We cannot issue a permit without the employer information.
How Old Do I Have to Be?
It depends on who hires you. Some places only hire ages 16 and up, some places are more open to hiring younger students. The only difference is the amount of hours you can work on a school day and the time span. See chart below for details.
Who needs one?
All minors under 18 years of age who have not graduated from high school, and are employed in the state of California must have a Work Permit. If you are 18, you do not need a Work Permit (unless your employer is requiring it).
I already graduated, do I still need one?
No, seniors who graduated are no longer required to have a Work Permit even if under age 18. You may have to show proof of graduation to your employer (transcript or diploma).
What are the requirements to obtain a Work Permit?
Criteria for a Work Permit include the following:
- 2.0 GPA
- No more than 18 unexcused period absences per semester
- No F's
How Often Do I Renew My Work Permit?
Permits must be renewed at the beginning of every semester and before summer break.
Can I Have More Than One Permit?
Yes, students can have multiple Permits, but the hours allowed to work daily must be split between the two jobs. Students cannot exceed the amount of hours they are allowed to work within their age group, although they may work at different locations.
