2023 FAQs
1. How do I know if I am receiving an award/recognition at the Senior Awards Ceremony? Three invitations will be sent out - one in the U.S. postal mail the week of May 15, one sent to your school email the week of May 15, and one delivered to you in class the week of May 22.
2. How are award recipients selected? In a variety of ways! Staff nominations, GPA, earning outside scholarships, military enlistment, or students can self-report that they’ve received an award. The deadline to self-report was May 10.
3. How many guests can I invite? Three.
4. Do we have to wear masks? Masks are not required this year.
5. Where can we sit? Seating for award/recognition recipients will be on the east side of the Gym and seating for guests will be on the west side of the Gym.
6. Can you tell me what I won? No, it’s a surprise.
7. How should I dress? Dressy casual.
8. Can I give a speech? Thank my fans? Sorry, no.
9. Do I get a trophy? It depends on the award. Some awards are accompanied by a scholarship, trophy, plaque, medal, cord or Certificate of Recognition.
10. Can my guests bring balloons? No, balloons, glitter, confetti, birdseed, and food are all prohibited. If guests show up with balloons, they will be asked to return them to their vehicle.
11. Is there a photographer? We will have a student photographer at the event but parents are also welcome to take their own photos.
12. Will my photos be shared? Yes, photos will be emailed to attendees and some scholarship sponsors after the ceremony. If you do not want your photo shared, you must email [email protected] to opt out.
12. Where can my family park? Any of our three parking lots: Student parking lot, Visitor parking lot, or Staff parking lot.
13. What if I can’t make it to the Senior Awards Ceremony? What happens to my award? You can pick up your award and a Program from the Career Center in Room 205 during the week following the Senior Awards Ceremony.
14. Are there any other instructions? During the ceremony, when the student’s name is called, the student will approach the award sponsor, accept the award, have a photo taken, and return to their seat. Some students will stand at their seat and the award will be brought to them. Students are not permitted to sit with guests.

COMMUNITY AWARDS
Mike Nishio Student-Athlete Scholarship
Awarded in memory of Coach Nishio who was a 1963 Alumni, Physical Education Teacher, Coach of various sports, and Athletic Director at CK McClatchy High School before his 2003 retirement. He was a founding member of the CKM Restore the Roar organization and inducted into the 2013 CKM Athletic Hall of Fame. In January 2016, Athletic Director, Rob Feickert, arranged an unveiling of the former Center Court Lion dedicated in Coach Nishio’s memory. One of the things Coach Nishio loved most about McClatchy is its diversity and how there is a place of acceptance for everyone.
Erich Jenkins Scholarship
This foundation was started to honor a McClatchy alumni who believed in changing a life every day. The scholarship recognizes students who are passionate about making a difference in their world and have already begun to do so. It is the foundation’s hope that helping these inspiring young people further their education will give them greater opportunity to touch the lives of others.
California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation
This foundation is a non-profit legal services and advocacy organization, whose primary purpose is to help improve the political, social, and economic status of rural communities. Every year, CRLA gets wonderful high school students who wish to give back to the communities from which they come.
Grand Canyon University President Scholarship
The President Scholarship is an Academic Award for students with an incoming Weighted High School GPA of 3.9 or higher.
Kiwanis Club of Greater Sacramento
Kiwanis Club of Greater Sacramento sponsors the Key Club at McClatchy High School and annually recognizes a graduating senior who has demonstrated service hours to their community and school, leadership, and academic achievement.
National German Exam
The National German Exam is administered each year to over 20,000 high school students. The Exam, now in its 62nd year, provides individual diagnostic feedback and rewards students through an extensive regional and national prize program.
- The Achievement Award recognizes above average achievement on the National German Exam.
- The Bronze Medal is awarded for distinguished achievement on the National German Exam.
- The Gold Medal is awarded for distinguished achievement in the 90th percentile or higher on the National German Exam.
Parent Teacher Student Association Senior Scholarship
The CKM PTSA College Scholarship is awarded to outstanding PTSA high school senior members. The scholarship is generously funded by PTSA members.
Sacramento City Teachers Association Scholarship
The SCTA has been in existence since 1921 and represents all full and part-time teachers and substitutes, adult education, special education, pre-school and children’s centers, school counselors, psychologists, nurses, social workers, librarians and many others in the Sacramento City Unified School District. The SCTA membership stands at approximately 2,500 in our 43,000 student district. Currently, SCTA is the 7th largest teacher union in California.
- The SCTA Book Award is given to a graduating senior who has excelled academically and will be attending college in the fall.
- The SCTA Most Improved Scholarship is awarded to a graduating, college-bound senior who has demonstrated significant academic improvement over the course of their high school years.
- The SCTA Scholarship is awarded to an individual who demonstrates academic excellence, leadership and community service.
Ulrich Oldham Legacy Fund
The Ulrich Oldham Legacy Fund is a nonprofit developed to help increase equity and student voice at C.K. McClatchy High School. The organization works to support students who are actively engaged in serving their community. Scholarship recipients have demonstrated ongoing service to their community.
Zonta Club of Sacramento
Founded in 1938, the Zonta Club of Sacramento is focused on improving the status of women and girls locally and globally. They recognize 5 senior girls who contribute service to the community, are active in student clubs, sports, and organizations, and excel academically. They are very impressed with the academic success and school and community involvement of the 2023 recipients of the Zonta Girl Scholarships.
US Army Scholar Athlete Award
Recognizes two athletes who have excelled in an organized sport during the school year and have demonstrated a strong academic performance well above average.
US Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award
Recognizes two distinguished athletes who are members of a varsity team, leaders among their peers and outstanding citizens.
US Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award
In this day and age, mental strength has joined physical fitness as a distinguishing hallmark of a Marine. This award is given to individuals who are recognized as academic scholars, leaders among peers and outstanding citizens.
US Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence
The US Marine Corps music program offers musicians the opportunity to present their talents in service to our country, to travel, and earn an education. The US Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence goes to an outstanding musical performer, capable of performing as a soloist, a leader among his peers and an outstanding citizen.
Enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces
Recognition of our brave CKM students enlisted to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces for the protection of the United States of America.
SCUSD SCHOLARSHIPS
McClatchy Class of ’66 Scholarship
This scholarship was started in 2011 by a dozen members of the class of 1966 who have remained friends over the 57 years since they left the halls of McClatchy. They are spread around the country now but find themselves united in the desire to give something back to the school that had such a positive influence on their lives. Including the five scholarships being presented, they have awarded 61 scholarships over the past 13 years. Each year, they are tremendously impressed by the quality of the applicants from McClatchy’s senior class and wish these students continued success as they pursue their plans for college and careers.
Rodney Hollander Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Mr. Hollander’s daughter to celebrate his years of service to Sacramento City Unified School District. Before coming to McClatchy he was a teacher at Will C. Wood and counselor at California Middle School. At McClatchy High School he was a counselor, coach, mentor, and finally an administrator before retiring. His love for all students and his job was his greatest gift to our District. He believed that every student could succeed in whatever they chose to do. This scholarship is to encourage a CKM student to find their passion while attending a Los Rios Community College Campus.
Class of ’57 Scholarship
The Class of ’57 Scholarship is made possible through donations of the members of the graduating class of ’57. Dedicated alumni have generously donated funds at class reunions over the past 65 years to support students entering post-secondary education. The proceeds from the investment of this fund provide a scholarship to a deserving CKM graduating senior.
Carpenter’s Local Union No. 46 Scholarship
The Sacramento Carpenters Local Union No. 586 was established in 1881. They established a system of apprenticeship training that allowed apprentices to receive a high level of skill training and to be employed at the same time. After a prescribed period of time with the successful completion of the requisite class work, these apprentices were accepted as journeymen, some credits are granted toward an Associate Degree. In the 1970’s Carpenter’s Local Union No. 586 created a college scholarship fund from excess local funds in another effort to benefit the community of Sacramento. On January 1, 2001, the union merged with other local unions to form the new Sacramento Area Carpenter’s Local Union No. 46, which is carrying on with the traditions long established here in Sacramento for the benefit of all working people and the community at large. The Sacramento Area Carpenter’s Local Union No. 46 has continued to award an annual scholarship since the 1970’s to a Sacramento City Unified School District college-bound student.
John A. and Charlotte M. Church Memorial Scholarship
The John A. and Charlotte M. Church Memorial Scholarship was established in 1999. John A. Church came to C. K. McClatchy High School in 1938 as Chairman of the Business Department. He taught business classes, became the school’s Controller, and eventually the Director of Student Activities. He greatly enjoyed working with students and always held an optimistic attitude toward the younger generation. His wife, Charlotte M. Church, was also a teacher. Mr. Church retired in 1970 and was personally involved in establishing this memorial fund prior to his passing. The John A. and Charlotte M. Church Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a CKM student enrolling in a campus of the University of California.
Dell’Orto Simmons Scholarship
The Dell’Orto Simmons Scholarship was established in 2014 as a memorial to “Bill” Simmons, a former student at McClatchy High School. Mr. Simmons and his wife Mildred Dell’Orto left part of their estate in trust to provide scholarships for students from McClatchy High School. The trust helps to support two students who plan to further their education.
Luela M. Goff Memorial Scholarship
The Luela M. Goff Memorial Scholarship was established in 1965 as a memorial to the wife of Frances Willie Goff, a former teacher at Sacramento High School and chair of the school’s business department. Mr. Goff left his entire estate in trust to provide scholarships for students from Sacramento City Unified School District high schools. The trust supports a student attending a university or college in the state of California.
Lino Delgadillo Memorial Scholarship
The Lino Delgadillo Memorial Scholarship is issued in honor of the memory of Lino Delgadillo on behalf of the Delgadillo family. This scholarship is for one Senior cadet enrolled in the Air Force Jr. ROTC Program and one Senior enrolled in the Criminal Justice Program at CKM who plan to attend a Community College, UC, CSU, or Vocational program within the state of California.
Louis and Theresa Sidhu Memorial Scholarship
Louis and Theresa Sidhu were married for 50 years and resided in Sacramento, CA for the majority of their lives. They raised four daughters for whom they worked hard in order to give them a private school education. Louis and Theresa knew the value of education and always encouraged their children to go to college. The Louis and Theresa Sidhu Memorial Scholarship is established specifically for a McClatchy college-bound student of Asian-Indian or Hispanic ethnicity with a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or above. This scholarship is established to honor Louis and Theresa’s lives and legacy.
CKM AWARDS
ASSETs Leadership Award
The After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens (ASSETs) award is given to students who have excelled in leadership and have promoted healthy choices and behaviors and are recognized by both their teachers and peers as having an unrivaled work ethic.
Associated Student Body Award
This award is presented to the elected ASB President in recognition of their leadership and commitment to elevating the campus’ school spirit and morale.
Herkenrath ASB Unsung Hero Award
Jim Herkenrath was an ASB Director for 20 years. This award is given to an ASB member who does not hold office but has been actively involved and exceptional in some way. They make CKM and the community great with their service and activism.
Champion Award
This award is given to a student who is recognized for growth through independence, self-advocacy and empathy for others.
Bill Morgan Sportsmanship Award
The Bill Morgan Sportsmanship award was established in 2014 by Restore the Roar. Bill graduated from McClatchy in 1946 and came back to be a Teacher, AP, and Principal in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. He held the student athletes at McClatchy to a very high standard. He not only expected high performance of the athletic fields and the classroom, he had the highest value for good sportsmanship, citizenship, and leadership. This award is presented annually to a senior female and male athlete who best represent the ideals that Mr. Morgan valued.
Woody Adams Outstanding Female Athlete
The Woody Adams Outstanding Female Athlete award goes to a top Female senior athlete. Mr. Adams was the 4th principal at McClatchy from 1971-1975. He created this award for female student athletes at the start of Title 9. This award dates back to 1975.
SA Pepper Outstanding Male Athlete
The SA Pepper Outstanding Male Athlete award goes to a top male senior athlete. Mr. Pepper was the first principal at McClatchy from 1937-1962. This award dates back to 1937.
Bilingual Program’s Outstanding Academic Achievement Award
This award is given to a student who has participated in the CKM Bilingual education program and has excelled academically while facing the challenge of language acquisition.
Bilingual Program’s Perseverance Award
This award is given to a student who has persevered throughout their high school career despite the challenges presented with the task of learning a second language.
Exceptional Service Award
This award honors a student who has selflessly provided exceptional service to CKM or the community and has led service projects.
Good Samaritan Award
This award recognizes a student who enjoys helping others, is compassionate, empathizes with others, and puts others' needs before their own.
Principal’s Recognition Award
This award recognizes two students who have attended CKM for four years, have maintained a 2.5 GPA and above, have demonstrated outstanding commitment to CKM, and have benefitted CKM with their service to the school and the community.
Governor Gillette Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship recognizes two students who have excelled in the areas of math, science, or engineering and who have shown tremendous passion and dedication in their respective STEM fields.
Lion Legacy Scholarship
This is a gift from an anonymous CKM alumni who is a supporter of higher education as a path forward. The recipient embodies the spirit of McClatchy High School, is a student who has contributed to the life of the campus, will be attending a four-year university in the fall, and who cares about the community at large.
California State Seal of Civic Engagement
The California State Seal of Civic Engagement is awarded by the California State Board of Education to California students who have demonstrated excellence in civics education through civic participation and an understanding of the United States Constitution, the California Constitution, and the democratic system of government.
California State Seal of Biliteracy
The California State Seal of Biliteracy is awarded in recognition of students who have studied and attained a high level of proficiency of speaking, reading, and writing one or more languages, in addition to English, by high school graduation.
3.0 - 3.49 GPA
Students who have achieved a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.0 through 3.49 from their freshmen year of high school through May 15, 2023.
3.5 – 3.99 GPA
Students who have achieved a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.5 through 3.99 from their freshmen year of high school through May 15, 2023.
4.0 – 4.5 GPA
Students who have excelled academically by earning a cumulative weighted GPA of 4.0 through 4.5 from their freshmen year of high school through May 15, 2023.
